History of Richardson TX

Richardson TX was settled by pioneers from Kentucky and Tennessee in the 1840s. Shortly after the Civil War, the railroad came through. In 1873, Richardson TX was chartered and named after the secretary of the Houston & Texas Central Railroad, Alfred S Richardson.

Due to an electric railway that connected Richardson TX to Dallas and other cities, the population grew. In 1925, the town incorporated and elected its first mayor. By 1940, Richardson TX was 740 people. By the end of WWII, Richardson TX had doubled in size. When Texas Instruments opened its offices in Dallas in the 1950s near Richardson TX, land values grew along with the city’s population. Two decades later, the town had 56,000 people. After the annexation of Buckingham in 1996 and development throughout the city, the population in 2000 was almost 92,000 citizens.
