Wylie TX hasn’t always been known as such. Originally, the area was known as Nickelville after the first store. Eventually, the town moved half a mile north to be on the railroad and was incorporated as Wylie TX in 1887. Why the name Wylie TX? To honor Lt Colonel William D Wylie, an agent of the railroad and Civil War veteran.

Wylie TX continued to grow as another railroad, the St. Louis Southwestern Railway, came through town. By 1920, Wylie TX had 35 businesses and its own weekly newspaper. During the 30’s and 40’s, Wylie TX became known as “Wide Awake Wylie” because of businesses that stayed open until midnight.

With the need for dairy in Dallas, the cash crop of onions, and the construction of Lavon Dam, Wylie TX continued to grow. Although recent history has seen two disasters including a tornado and a series of fires, Wylie TX has a thriving downtown and many historic buildings.
